Macular Degeneration FAQs

1. What Is Macular Degeneration?

Macular degeneration, also known as age-related macular degeneration (AMD), is a condition that affects the central part of the retina responsible for sharp, detailed vision, known as the macula. It can make activities like reading, driving, and recognizing faces almost impossible.

2. What Are the Types of Macular Degeneration?

There are two main kinds of macular degeneration:

•             Dry AMD: The most common form, caused by thinning in the macula and buildups of tiny protein deposits called drusen.

•             Wet AMD: A less common but more severe form, caused by abnormal blood vessels leaking fluid or blood into the retina.

3. What Are the Symptoms of Macular Degeneration?

Symptoms of macular degeneration include:

•             Blurred or distorted central vision

•             Difficulty seeing fine details

•             Dark or empty spots in your central vision

•             Colors appearing less vibrant

If you notice any of these symptoms, it is important to schedule an eye exam near you right away.

4. What Causes Macular Degeneration?

The exact cause is not fully understood. However, there are a few risk factors, including:

•             Aging (most common in people over 50)

•             Family history of AMD

•             Smoking

•             High blood pressure or cholesterol

•             Poor diet lacking in leafy greens and antioxidants

5. How Do Our Eye Surgeons Treat Macular Degeneration?

Unfortunately, there is no cure for AMD, treatments can slow its progression and help preserve vision:

•             Dry AMD: Lifestyle changes, such as a healthy diet and quitting smoking, along with specific vitamins and supplements, may help.

•             Wet AMD: Treatments include anti-VEGF injections to reduce abnormal blood vessel growth and laser therapy to seal leaking vessels.
