The Symptoms of Glaucoma

The symptoms of glaucoma include a loss of peripheral or side vision and seeing halos around lights, especially at night. You may experience significant glare in bright sunlight, making it harder to see clearly and have redness in the affected eye as well as a dull ache. Your eyes may look hazy, you may have tunnel vision in which you have very narrow vision and you may even experience vision loss. Glaucoma is quite common as people age and the procedure to correct it is quite simple as long as the condition is detected early.

Types of Glaucoma Surgery

There are two main types of eye surgery for glaucoma: laser surgery and incisional surgery. There are several different types of laser surgery used to correct glaucoma and the type you need will depend on how severe the pressure in your eye is and which form of glaucoma is being treated.

During laser surgery, your eye is numbed so you do not feel any pain. The ophthalmologist will hold a lens close to your eye and aim a light beam at it. Then the laser is applied and you will just see a flash of light like a camera light that flashes. It only takes seconds to perform the procedure.

For incisional glaucoma surgery, you will have a tiny incision made in your eye, which again, you will not feel because of the numbing drops, relaxing medications, and a limited type of anesthesia given before the procedure. This procedure only takes a few minutes to perform as well.

What is the Aftercare?

Both types of surgery are done on an outpatient basis in the office. After your glaucoma procedure, if you had the laser type, you can return to normal daily activities the next day. After incisional surgery, you may need to follow a few specific instructions for about a week before returning to your normal activities.
