How is myopia diagnosed?

Myopia is usually diagnosed during a normal eye exam. When visual acuity is tested, it will show that vision farther away needs correction. Our eye doctor will then use a refraction test to determine what prescription is needed to correct your vision.

Will myopia get better on its own?

No, but it will usually stabilize as you get into your twenties. It is a lifetime condition. However, you can opt to have LASIK surgery on your eyes to correct the condition and get rid of your glasses. If you get cataracts as you age, getting cataract surgery can also correct myopia depending on the new lenses that are placed in your eye.

How early can myopia be diagnosed?

Having regular vision exams will allow your child to be diagnosed early. Only about 5% of preschool children have myopia. It rises to 30% in teens, so it is important to get your child's vision checked regularly. Glasses have come a long way and children have a lot more frame and fashion choices than in the past. Watch for signs that your child may have myopia, such as holding things closer to see them and squinting. Early treatment is always best.
