Hard To Fit Contacts vs Regular Contacts

After wearing glasses for years, the time may come when you decide to try contacts. As a first-time contact lens user, you may need some help in selecting the right contacts for you. At Avery Eye Clinic, we carry a variety of contact lenses to suit the visual needs of our patients in Conroe, Huntsville, and The Woodlands. Our ophthalmologists are happy to guide you in selecting the contacts you need.

What’s the Difference?

Most people are capable of using regular soft contact lenses without any problems. These lenses are generally comfortable, safe, and simple to use. Some people, however, have eye conditions that make it impossible to use regular contacts. That is where hard to fit contacts come in.

If you have dry eye, astigmatism, keratoconus, or presbyopia, regular contact lenses will not meet your visual needs. You can, however, wear hard to fit contacts that coincide with your eye condition to correct your vision.

Types of Hard to Fit Contacts

There are various types of hard to fit contacts. Our eye doctors will go over these types with you and recommend the type best suited to your visual needs.

Rigid gas-permeable contacts are good for people with dry eye syndrome since they retain moisture beneath the lens, making them less likely to aggravate dry eye symptoms.

Toric lenses offer greater stability, making them a good choice for correcting problems with astigmatism.

Scleral lenses are recommended for people with keratoconus since the lens sits on the white part of your eye as opposed to the cornea. Keratoconus is a condition where the cornea of your eye bulges outward.

If you have presbyopia (the inability to focus on near objects), you can benefit from multi-focal contacts as they correct both near and far vision.
