Understanding Flashes and Floaters: What Are They and When to Seek Help

Understanding Flashes and Floaters: What Are They and When to Seek Help

If you suddenly notice spots, cobwebs, or lightning streaks in your vision, you may be experiencing floaters or flashes. At Avery Eye Clinic, serving patients in Conroe, Huntsville, and The Woodlands, we want to help you understand these common eye phenomena and when to seek medical care.

What are Floaters?

Floaters appear as specks, dots, clouds, or cobwebs drifting across your field of vision. They are caused by clumps of protein or other debris suspended in the vitreous gel inside the eye. Floaters are usually harmless and are a natural part of aging, but they should be evaluated.

What are Flashes?

Flashes appear as flickering lights or lightning streaks, sometimes at the periphery of vision. They occur when the vitreous gel rubs against or pulls on the retina. Flashes are also typically benign but warrant examination to ensure the retina is intact.

When to Seek Help

In most cases, flashes and floaters are not a major concern. However, they can occasionally signal a retinal tear or detachment. Seek prompt medical attention if you experience:

  • A sudden increase in floaters or flashes
  • Floaters that look like a curtain or veil covering your vision
  • Flashes appearing like strobe lights
  • Loss of side or peripheral vision
  • Decreased central vision, blurriness, or blind spots

Causes and Diagnosis

During a comprehensive eye exam, we'll check for retina abnormalities and evaluate the cause of your symptoms. Common causes include:

  • Posterior vitreous detachment: Gel pulling away from the retina
  • Vitreous shrinkage: Age-related collagen changes
  • Retinal tear or detachment: Urgent conditions requiring treatment
  • Inflammation or bleeding: Associated with infections or diabetes

Treatment Options

Most flashes and floaters resolve on their own and can be managed conservatively. If due to a retinal tear or other condition requiring intervention, we offer advanced treatments like laser photocoagulation or surgery.
